Peter Jurgs '79 has held the javelin record for 35 years.Jurgs and his teammates turned their attention to the NCAA Division III Championship hosted by Calvin College. At the MAC championship, he handily took home the title with a toss of 206 feet, six inches, while the Bullets wrapped up another team championship in equally dominating fashion. ![]() He won every throwing competition he took part in heading into the national event, eclipsing 200 feet four times. I was never concerned about him doing the right thing."Īs a sophomore, Jurgs simply dominated the competition. "More importantly, he was a hard-working kid. "The first thing that sticks out in my mind was his hair - curly blonde hair and it was big," said Streeter, who coached the track squad from 1976-78. Jurgs' dedication and drive made things pretty easy for new track and field head coach Barry Streeter. After eclipsing more than 200 feet on a throw against Susquehanna University, Jurgs took third at the conference championship to help the Bullets grab their first team title in 16 years. The former Jefferson Township High School product and Wharton, N.J., native quickly took Gettysburg and the Middle Atlantic Conference by storm as a freshman in 1976. While his teammates achieved entry because of their exploits on the track, Jurgs received his nomination because of his outstanding accomplishments in the javelin. Jurgs will be the sixth Gettysburg thinclad from 1976-1979 to gain entry into the Hall, joining former teammates William Geating '79, James Martino '78, Ed Riggs '77, Mark Roddy '77, and Kirby Scott '77. – The late 1970s was arguably one of the greatest periods of success for the Gettysburg College men's track and field program and that will be further augmented by the addition of former standout Peter Jurgs' 79 to the Hall of Athletic Honor on Sept. ![]()
